5 Articulate a conceptual understanding of group dynamics and organizational behavior.
While the previous competencies can be seen as more one-on-one, ITP 5 is solely focused on group dynamics. The most prominent theory that I was introduced to in CPE was Bowen’s family systems theory. The main point in Bowen’s theory is the differentiation of self. In this theory one self is independent of the specific relationship and the other self is one that will borrow or lend parts of themselves in a relationship.[1] This competency is quite expansive as it not only covers small family relationships but also larger groups and organizations.
For a brief overview of group theories, there are many resources available.[2] From my CPE units, I remember applying the Tuckman Model of Group Development to our cohort of students with concepts like storming, forming, and norming. This model has also been applied in nursing teams which is the hospital chaplain’s domain.[3]
